I received a couple of questions from the Kingdom Impact Network to give my view on relationships. It is a small group of believers in which I also belong and it main objective is to share the gospel to every corner of the world via various media. Feel free to check the facebook page of the group and stay connected with us.
Below I share my mind on how I see the relationship from the bible studyings, feel free to comment if you agree or disagree to any of the statement or the commentary I have passed on this topic.
What is the relationship?
I would want to make it clear that I will only discuss this topic based on the Christianity point of view, the relationship between man and God, the relationship between man and himself; the relationship between one person to another. We live in the information age where the is much to say about everything, and almost the knowledge on anything is in our palm and we access it through the cell phone. We need to realize that what Hinduism, Islamic, or humanitarians believe about relationships would be quite different from how Christianity approaches the idea of relationships. Nevertheless, the general definition of relationship in all disciplines of life and religions would consider the connection between people or things in their description of the relationship.
Are there types & levels of relationship?
Subjected to correction, I think“types and levels” of relationship have similar characteristics and it seems to refer to the characteristics of bonds that connect people. I find it to be one idea that explains how people can be connected. There many levels or type of relationships, of course, that is according to world perspectives. Moreover, the bible does precisely tell us God’s will on the level of relationship a person could have.
The bible indicates that the first level of relationship a man should have is the relationship between them and God through Jesus Christ. Why?
- Because God display the love that no one else can offer (John3:16)
- Because God is the creator and the highest supreme being (Genesis 1: 27)
- Because God is the safety, our refugee and strength (Psalm 18:10/46:1)
- Because God is the ever-present help in time of need and trouble (Psalm 121:1-2)
- Because God has the greater empathy and He wipes every tear’s (Revelation 21:4)
Jesus Christ is our friend according to the gospel of John 15: 13-15. We have to keep in mind that being in a relationship with God is the hope for eternal life.
The second level of relationship is that one has with themselves in relating to their soul, spirit, and flesh. This let me bring up the idea of self-esteem, as believers we need to have the confidence to be what God says we are. This helps us acknowledge that we do not depend on our ability but of God, Romans 12: 3, urges us not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought but think of ourselves according to the measure of faith God has given us. In the self-relationship type, one has high emotional intelligence to exercise more of self-awareness, self-motivation, self-regulation, and empathy. For biblical reference read about the will of God and the purpose for each believer (Eph 1:3; 2:10; Col 2:10-12; 1Tim 1:12-14; 1 Cor. 15:9-11)
The third level of relationship is between a man with people, this includes the relationship you have with fellow believers, spouse, friends, relatives, and acquaintances. I have to point out that the context of the third level of relationship can be subdivided to be elaborated independently. I nominate this as the third level in the ranks of relationship levels because it’s doesn’t precede the first two-level of relationship in terms of importance. I will not elaborate much on these because I want this post to be short, and we could discuss it at another time if God accords us an opportunity.
What are secretes to better any relationship?
Alike the world would give you tips to better a relationship, the bible gives the best endorsement to better a relationship. It would take me much space on this blog to elaborate in detail about the bible teaching on how to build and maintain a good relationship with God, oneself, and others, let it be a topic for another day. Nevertheless, imagine you are a gardener of flowers, in general, what are the basic things you will be constantly doing to keep your plant healthy? I believe you will be more concerned about the plants; you will treat the plants with patience and gentleness; you will water it regularly and keep weeding the garden, and you will prune the plant to facilitate its growth. The consistency of your commitment to the garden is what determines the success of the garden. The nature of the commitment a gardener has to its plant directly implies the requirement of a healthy relationship. One of the gears to consider to better a relationship is communication. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing”, in other words, I could say the Bible recommends us to communicate with God without ceasing to better our relationship. The Bible talks of love and how to approach others with kindness, gentleness, patience, and tolerance to better a relationship. (Philippians 4:8; Ephesians 4:2; Colossians 3:9; 1 Peter 4:8). For me, the secrete of better relationship is to fear God, as the Proverb 9:10 says the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. This is the wisdom that could better a good relationship.
What is the most important of relationships and why?
The organs of the body will never function on the isolation of other organs because it wouldn’t manage to carry the functionality of other organs. Due to that, it works as a team or members of the body in supporting each other. That is the major importance of relationships, to provide support, guidance, and strengthen one another toward the common good which is eternal life.
