Why you should stop saying every one else does it if you're a Christian?

Mostly, we are told that some widely accepted practice must be good because all those people who are doing it can’t be wrong. Young Christian sometimes tell their guardians, “all my friends are doing it!” with the intention to suit the world. The question we should ask ourselves is, “should we do it because everyone else does it?”. Is the voice of God the voice of the majority? Or should we democratize religious doctrines and believes to outfit the majority’s needs because our government leads us to think the majority is right? In Isaiah Bibles says:

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:8-9

From the verse above, it is clear that God does not think like men think, even if all the men of the world gathered up to think a practice is good, that does not necessarily prove God thinks it is good. The ways of God cannot be determined from people’s perception, but it is revealed in is words. In (2 Timothy 3: 16-17, KJV) the bible says “all scriptures are given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” This is because the ways of God are prescribed in the Bible to direct your decisions and show you the way of God. Thus, it’s not necessarily what the bishop says, what a prophet says, what the government says but everything to be compared to the word of God. If it’s not the word of God then it is not the will of God, even if it carries the highest rank of moral value or it is ethically right that doesn’t justify it to be right.

God is not the author of confusion to say something today and change tomorrow (1 Corinthians 14:33), any twisted gospel or doctrine that any preacher or leader can come up with is not inspired by God.

Things you should remember:

1 The majority is not always correct

If you’re fond of the Bible stories you might have come across the story of Noah’s. In his days God sent His words to people, revealing His plans to destroy the world to them through Noah and asking them to enter the boat before His wrath came to the world. But in that time, the majority refused to follow the way of God and called it foolishness. When the appointed time of destruction came, they were all flooded and destroyed by heavy rains, and only eight people were saved (Genesis 6:5-8). Was the majority, right?

Probably you come across the story of prophet Elijah who stood alone facing 450 prophets of Baal in proving a true God. Was the majority right then?

Should we agree regarding those people who crucified Jesus, that all those people can’t be wrong? No.

Majority of the people since ancient history it has never been correct in religious context because the mysteries of God are known by minority and the devil blind many to not see the truth of God. Thereby, making the majority of people to miss the right path.

2 Know the word of God for yourself

The kingdom of God is individual and each person is required to make every effort to enter into the narrow gate. The bible says in (Matthew 7:13-14, KJV) “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” If its few who find it and does an effort to enter through the narrow gate, then it should be your obligation to know the word for yourself because many are lost through the teachers of religious philosophy and human doctrines. Thus, the bible recommends that “you see to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principle of the world, rather than according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8). The only way you could see to it and not be enslaved by the will of the majority of people in this world is by knowing the teaching of God for yourself.

Do not wait for anyone to show you the holy scriptures, seek God in His words for yourself and he shall reveal the truth to you.

3 God punishes the wicked

God is not a respecter of a person (Romans 2:11, KJV), when people do not obey His ways and teach, even if they constitute the majority of the world, He will destroy them. He has done it before, in the time of Noah, in Sodom and Gomora, and nothing can stop Him from doing it again. He only does favor the few that obey His ways. Thus, we shouldn’t follow the majority of the people in a wrong practice because the wrath of God descends upon the evil doers.

The only way you can escape the wrath of God in this world is by obeying and following God’s ways.

4 God ways are the final

Do you have to compromise your standard because everyone else does it? No. The bible recommends that we do not get conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by renewing our minds. Thereby, being able to test and approve what is good and acceptable to God (Romans 12:2). The ways of God should be the final indicators of each believer who await the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and who keep faith in the rupture. We living in a perverted generation where people act corruptly and immoral but we have to stand as a lamp in the midst of darkness (Philippians 2: 15) and the Lord Jesus Christ is the source of our light.

What to consider when choosing a church?

Find some tips to why you have to be going to church and ways in which you could identify a good congregation.

As Christians, we find ourselves in situations where we have to choose a decent place to worship. We might have experienced it already in our lives. Maybe that time we shifted from our City to another City, or maybe when we recently began to have the desire to seek the Lord and we didn’t know where to start from. We might be confused with the fact that there are over a million different Christian churches in the world today while history says the is only one church of Jesus Christ which was established in the new testament. We can watch World Video Bible School, to understand why we have so many churches today when the Bible talks of a single church of Jesus Christ.

The main objective of this article is to help us with some tips to consider whenever we seek a place to worship. We cannot refuse to go to church because we think all the churches around us are denominations, or rationally conclude the is no perfect church today in the world, and forsake attending the church. We must remember that as Christ-followers we were called to obey the gospel, and Hebrew 10:25 (KJV) says that

this scripture recommends us not to stop attending the church services, but keep going for the edification of our souls. We have as an obligation to find a place of worship, as that we need to be certain that the place at which we choose to worship will lead us into being saved and prepare us for the second coming of Jesus Christ.

I have come up with a few points that could help us not get lost in seeking a place to worship, these tips have worked for me and the people around me. It’s good for these tips to be accompanied by prayers to engage the spirit of the Lord and get it involved in our desire to find a decent place of worship. I will discuss five of the points that I feel could enable us to distinguish between the church of Jesus Christ and the church of humans. These tips are not the only ones or the final point to consider out-there, the spirit of the lord can reveal some more to you, and it would be a blessing to us to have it shared with the world in the comments below.

Tips to consider when choosing a church?

  1. Eternal life

The first and the most important thing to why we choose Jesus Christ as our Lord and personal savior is eternal life. The Bible tells us that God loved the world and He gave us His son, for whoever believes in the son to not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16), and the new testament is full of quotes of Jesus Christ affirming that He is the way and life (John 5: 24/ 6:47/10: 28-30/11:25). Therefore, if we do go to church is to seek eternal life in believing in Jesus Christ’s teachings and obeying them. They shouldn’t be anything else be placed at the first position of His teachings, the church that doesn’t talk about Jesus Christ or doesn’t make it people to believe in Jesus more than anything (prophets, wealth, miracles, e.t.c…) is thereby not leading people to eternal life, it deceives the people and lead them to death. William Branham’s (1965) sermon on “Doors indoor“, illustrate that churches are doors that supposed to call people out of the world and lead them to a door that takes to eternal life. The door that takes to eternal life is Jesus Christ. A shocking scenario is to see the church losing its purpose, denominations are illusively imperfects the functions of the church. Anthony Smith (2006) state that in today’s world, many ministers and church members have lost their first love and have gone after strange spirits. The first love of the church is Jesus Christ, we Christian were called to love God with all our hearts, our soul and our minds (Mathew 22:37). But in today’s world, the church ceases to love God with its heart and soul rather tend to follow God with its minds. Denominations twist Jesus’ teachings to satisfy their lust of fresh, and ego, it has turned the church into an entertainment ground, a business place, a fashion show, and an organization. Thereby, forgetting to teach and live the saint doctrine which gives life. If you’re a serious believer or you desire to be one, by now you should be able to distinguish between the churches that prepare it members for eternal life and those that act as a stumbling block of the people to not get into eternal life.

Always ask yourself, if the church you wish to congregate with talks about Jesus as the savior, believes all of His teachings, obey His word and hope for eternal life through Him? From there, you can tell whether the same church prepares its members for eternal life or not.

2. Growth

The Bible tells us when we believed we were like little children who relied on fragile foods and we are expected to grow from infancy to maturity (Hebrews 6:1). A church shouldn’t only base its doctrine on basic elementary of gospel-like the foundation of repentance from behaviors that leads to death, and of faith in God. But seek to establish a doctrine of maturity. You may have noticed that we have congregations that base their teachings in prayers alone and fighting off demons, others hold doctrines that do not lead to growth in Christ, and many choose to teach only half of the truth and forsake the rest. However, the Bible demands the church to teach the all truth without living anything behind for people to attain maturity (2 Corinthians 13: 10-12). The church should be in its knees praying for its members to grow in knowledge, understanding, wisdom and bearing the fruit of good works (Colossians 1:9-10). The church should continue to teach people to live their life in Christ, based on the faith and the call they received (Colossians 2:6 -2). The church should spiritually help its members know how to distinguish between good and evil (Hebrews 5: 12-14).  If a church does not lead people to growth then it is not a church of Christ. Spiritual growth does come upon having faith, and the Bible says faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). The church of Christ will teach the word of God to lead its members to attain faith in Jesus Christ and become mature in the knowledge of God.
Always ask yourself, what kind of doctrine does the church you desire to congregate with teach? Do the teachings lead to spiritual growth? Are the icons of the church showing the maturity regarding the teachings they received? If not, seek somewhere else and do not waste your time in empty worships.

3. Information

Every church of Jesus Christ must be informative, they should inform people about the time we live in following the Biblical calendar. The Bible tells us about the watchman who has to attentively listen to the word of God and warn the people of God (Ezekiel 3:17). The church ministers have a mandatory like that of a watchman and warn the church of God in preparing the church for the second coming of Christ. The church should be a place of correction and not a dormancy house that does not care about the lifestyle of its people. The church of Christ will keep informing people and challenging their lifestyles. If you join a church that doesn’t challenge your moral values concerning the saint doctrine that wouldn’t be a church of Christ, and if they don’t inform you about the coming of Christ, then it’s a dead pool, leave it and seek another place to worship.

Always ask yourself, what kind of information does the church provide? Does the information challenge you in preparing your life for the second coming of Christ?

4. Direction

The church of Christ should be able to provide you with mentorship, and not cause confusion. The church of Christ will direct your life with God’s words and prayers, and not use human ways to help you solve your problems. If you see a church that takes people to police, involved in politics or using other spiritual mediators ( Note that the is only one mediator between human and God) to solve problems then it should be clear that the congregation is not of Christ but a denomination of humans found on men’s reasoning and leading people to a dead pool.

Ask yourself, Could that congregation you wish to worship with assist you settle down your problem in Christ’s manner?

5. Home

A church should be a place to call home, a family of the saint and God-fearing people. The church should be like an oasis of hope in a desert of hopelessness. It should be a pillar of strength for the weak and a home for everyone.
Ask yourself, Do you feel yourself at home when you congregate with them? If not why?

Note some denominations might portray some of the points sited here. But a church of God will present you with all and possibly with some more traits that will tailor your life for Jesus Christ.

These are not the only points that could help in choosing a church to worship, I pray the spirit of God to assist you in choosing a better place to worship. The world would not deceive us because the scripture says we shall know them by their fruits (Mathew 7:15-20). Knowing a better place of worship raise your chances of understanding God’s ways, prepare your life and inherit the Kingdom of God. A bad congregation will lead you into the destruction of your soul and everlasting death, that is why I consider the choice of choosing a church as a personal duty.
